Whitening Toothpastes – Cheapest, easiest, and the least effective
Demand for teeth whitening products peaked when people became more conscious of the teeth’s aesthetic effect on their smile and on their persona. Dazzling whiter teeth make the smile brighter and make people more attractive. For those who can least afford the more expensive treatment and products, manufacturers of toothpaste began to incorporate whitening agents in their products.
Those who were able to undergo professional whitening treatment and are not able to afford the professionally endorsed aftercare maintenance opt to maintain the achieved whiteness of their teeth with whitening toothpaste.
Some people who cannot afford the teeth whitening systems available in the market choose to use whitening toothpaste as an alternative. It is definitely cheaper than the teeth whitening treatments, easier and more convenient to use, but it is the least effective method for whitening the teeth. It also has the least risk of side effects.
Technically all types of toothpaste have the ability to whiten the teeth by removing the food debris which are stuck on the surface and in the between the teeth. However, it cannot fully remove surface stains and the debris that penetrate the very tiny cracks that result from ordinary wear and tear.
By adding low concentration bleaching agents to toothpastes, manufacturers are able to enhance their products and market them as teeth whiteners. However, the effectiveness of these bleaching agents in the toothpaste is almost nil since brushing the teeth takes only one or two minutes at a time. Frequent use of the teeth whitening toothpaste when brushing the teeth may produce some noticeable effect after some time, but there may be traces of abrasion on the teeth due to hard brushing. There is also the risk of swallowing some amount of bleaching agent while brushing the teeth.
Some toothpaste manufactures increase the abrasive content of the toothpaste like silica, baking soda, aluminum oxide, and calcium carbonate. These abrasives also help to remove surface stains and dirt on the teeth but may also cause more stains and dulling of the surface enamel with prolonged use.
While its effect may be minimal, people will continue to use teeth whitening toothpaste as an alternative to other teeth whitening products and procedures because of its affordability and availability aside from the ease of using it. Effective or not, the knowledge that you are using something that is assured by the manufacturers to contribute to the beauty of your smile, can give you the self confidence needed to produce that dazzling bright smile.
